owered by Shopify?
Shopify is a powerhouse when it comes to housing your online store. With helpful features, easy setup, and affordable plans, anybody can run an online store without much hassle. There's a reason Shopify still remains at the top of the list as an affordable, user-friendly ecommerce platform.
For many online store owners, the look and feel of your store are everything. Because you donât have a physical storefront, the way your store is portrayed online can be the difference between a viewer clicking on it vs scrolling past it. When choosing what theme to use for your store on Shopify, you can choose from a free Shopify theme, a third-party developerâs theme or hire someone to create a customizable theme.
If you choose a theme developed by Shopify it will have a Powered by Shopify branded link in the footer. If youâre an online store owner who doesnât like this messageâdonât worry! We are going to break down how to remove the powered by Shopify message.
Before we break it down, letâs talk about why this message might not be ideal for some ecommerce store owners.
1. Looks unprofessional.
Building, creating, owning, and managing an online store is no small task. Finally having the space to share the items you're passionate about is a big accomplishment! For many owners, purchasing a URL and building your own website is difficult, especially if youâre doing it alone and donât have experience doing so.
This is why many store owners turn to ecommerce platforms like Shopify to help them in hosting their store. Unfortunately, having a Powered by Shopify message is unprofessional, distracting, and somewhat messy.
You want customers to focus on your independent and sole brand without noticing that youâre using someone elseâs help to build your website. If you care about how professional your website looks, itâs worth it to remove it.
2. Gives Shopify a backlink.
When a customer is browsing your website you want them to focus on your brand. Having unnecessary and distracting links can take users away from your store. A backlink is a link that sends you to another website or page. When talking about the Powered by Shopify message, this badge is a backlink. Clicking on it will take a user away from your storefront. This is another reason to remove this badge entirely.
3. Sends the wrong message.
Another thing to consider is what type of relationship youâre forming with your customers. In order to persuade a customer to type in their card information and make a purchase, your relationship has to be built on trust and transparency. The Powered by Shopify message shows that your website is built/hosted by a trusted brand; Shopify.
For many new businesses, this is a strong indication of the authenticity of your website. Although Shopifyâs brand awareness is strong among e-commerce merchants, Shopify is not a consumer brand. Because of this, it doesnât have high recognition among consumers who will be browsing your website.
There are trustworthy and notable badges/messages from well-known brands like Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, Norton, and Google that are likely going to be more notable and establish a greater line of trust with your consumers than a Shopify brand might.

In order to avoid upgrading, you can use 2 different methods to remove the Powered by Shopify badge. The first method is simple, quick, and easy to do. The second is a bit more in-depth and might require some CSS, although a beginner should still be able to get through it.
Method 1
Step 1
Once you log into your Shopify admin dashboard, head to the Online Store Section. Then, click on Themes.

Access the themes section on your Shopify admin.
Step 2
Notice once you click on themes, you should see your current theme template that is active. Next, click on Actions and choose Edit languages.

You need to click the Edit languages option.
Step 3
On the next screen, youâll want to filter by âpoweredâ and go to the field called Powered by Shopify towards the bottom.

You can use the filter to find the powered by Shopify page.
Step 4
In order to remove the Powered by Shopify message, youâll want to type in a single space in the field using your spacebar. This will essentially put a blank for the field instead of the message. Now, your footer will be blank and will not contain the Powered by Shopify text.
The powered by Shopify text wonât be displayed now on your siteâs footer.

Method 2
First, youâll need to navigate to the Shopify dashboard. Youâll see a sidebar on the left-hand side of the page. Click Online Stores and then Themes.
Then, you will see a gray Action button on the top of the page. Click the Action button and on the scroll-down menu, click Edit Code.

On the left ribbon, make sure you select the sections folder
Next, open the âFooter.Liquidâ file. Depending on what type of computer you are using, the next step will vary: On a Mac computer, select command + F. On a Windows PC, select Ctrl + F. Clicking this key combination will open a search bar. In the search bar, type in: â{{ powered_by_link }}â, and click search.

After you locate it, select edit code and then delete it {{ powered_by_link }}, and then save to save your settings. If you donât click save for this command, the change wonât reflect on your storeâs footer.
If you check your footer after doing this, you wonât see the Powered by Shopify badge anymore and youâre ready to launch your professional ecommerce store!
Alternative Methods
The last option is to simply leave the Powered by Shopify message. If you are a new online store or donât have much experience, having this message might be a good way to establish trust and show customers you are on your way to building a reputable brand on a secure and reliable website.
If none of these methods are preferable, there is always the option of hiring someone to do it for you. There are freelance services like Upwork or Fiverr that are easy to use and can help you customize your Shopify store. This will require a fee but might be a simpler option if you have the funds and lack the time or ability to do it yourself.
Another benefit to hiring a third party to assist with removing the Powered by Shopify message is this person will most likely know how to use the Shopify platform. Hiring them to do a simple task could lead to a beneficial relationship with someone who knows how to manage your website better than you might be able to on your own.
